Ruth Fortier was the 11th child of Henry Charles Fortier and Dorothy Ann Best. She married Stewart James Allen in 1928 at the age of 22, and they had three children. She started the ExToggery, a used clothing exchange, in order to swap children's clothes with her Toronto neighbours. ExToggery would go on to be a highly successful business run by her son and grandson. In 1936 she purchased land on Stoney Lake, Ontario and ran a girls summer camp for a number of years in order to cover the loan. That property remains in the family as a beloved summer cottage, "Nakemi" (the name derived from the first two letters of each of her children's names). Ruth and Stewart moved to nearby Lakefield in their retirement.
