John William Barkley was born on May 05, 1900 in Winona Shannon Co MO, to John and Nora (Harder) Barkley. He was only 6 months old when his father died. John was married to Gladys Going of Eminence, MO in 1917. She was the daughter of Othor F. and Cora Chestina (Norton Going). No children were born to this union. On December 27, 1924, John was united in marriage to Esther Olive Harrod, the daughter of George Washington and Martha (Greer) Harrod, in Eminence, Shannon Co MO. To this union eight children were born, Lillian Karyl, Martha Norrine, Roy Don, Max Eugene, Lawrence Lovell, Jennie Lea, Shannon Esther and William Harrod. John departed this life on August 12, 1975, at St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View, Howell Co MO, at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 7 days. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nora, grandparents William and Hannah (Martin) Barkley and Judge Thomas A. and Louisa (Rucker) Harder; his daughter Lillian Karyl Barkley on June 9, 1941, in St Louis, Missouri, at the age of 16, and son William Harrod 'Billy' Barkley on May 7, 1960, in St Louis, Missouri, at the age of 15, and sister Lillie Louanna Barkley on Dec. 12, 1918, at Taft, California, at the age of 22. He is survived by his wife, Esther, sisters Hannah Coleman and Eleanor Weaver, daughters Norrine Norris, Jennie Prewett and Shannon Goldberg; sons Don, Max and Larry Barkley; 20 grandchildren, 3 step-grandsons, 7 great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, daughters-in-law Lois (Campbell) Barkley, Lola (Fansler) Barkley and Marguerite (Scoville) Barkley; a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends and acquaintances. John was a member of the Winona Christian Church. When his sister Lilly passed away in California during the flu epidemic her body was sent home on the train and he had to drive a team and wagon to St. Louis to pick it up and bring it back to Winona for burial. That was a roadtrip of about 150 miles! He said it took him two weeks and was a heartrending journey. His aunt Martha Rich and her family lived in California at that time and Lilly was living with or near them when she died. Except for a few years working in the oilfields in Kansas and Oklahoma, John spent all of his life at Winona as a farmer and livestock man, raising cattle, and running a restaurant and auction house in Winona. He was an accomplished auctioneer and sold many estate sales around the area. We fondly remember the sight of him slowly driving around the city streets in his old green Chevy pickup with rusted milk cans in the back. He was long suffering, having suffered from arthritis for 20 years. His funeral was held at the Winona Christian Church on August 14, 1975. He was laid to rest at the Pine Lawn Cemetery next to his daughter Lillie and son Bill in the family. Services were under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.
