In 1825 he graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Vermont. Soon after he commenced practice in Peru, Clinton county, N. Y. Three years later he removed to Plattsburg, N. Y., where he remained till 1856, when he removed to Detroit. In 1852 he was appointed Professor of Materia Medica and Practice of Medicine in the University of Vermont. This position he held for six years. He occupied successively the positions of Associate Editor and Editor of the Medical Independent, a journal formerly published in Detroit. In this position, as in all others, he exhibited a vast fund of information. He was a gentleman of the old school, was always honest, upright and courteous in his intercourse with his professional brethren and with the world. He passed many arduous years in his profession, and declined into a calm old age, having done his work well.

At a meeting of physicians, held in the Mayor's office, January 22, after various eulogistic remarks by many prominent members of the profession, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:

Whereas, An inscrutable Providence has again invaded our ranks and removed by death our brother, Dr. Edward Kane, thereby reminding us of the shortness of life and the futility of our art when the final call is made; therefore

Resolved, That in the death of Dr. Edward Kane, the profession not only, but the community at large, has lost an earnest and devoted physician, whose long and useful life deserves especial mention, for the fidelity, zeal and self-consecration to the duties of

Resolved, That, as a physician, we, his brethren, take pleasure in bearing our testimony to his integrity, courtesy, and honorable bearing toward all, especially to his brethren of the profession; also to his skill and acquirements in the art of medicine. In his death the community has sustained a severe loss, while to him, at his advanced age and with growing infirmities, death came as a relief from toil and a rest from his labors.

Resolved, That in token of our respect for the deceased, we will, as a body, attend the funeral services from his late residence.

Resolved, That a copy of the proceedings of this meeting be furnished to the family of our deceased brother.
