Ephraim's father, James, died two days after his sixteenth birthday. He stayed with his widowed mother, even after his marriage, at least until 1870. Ephraim from '55 to '80 was occupied as a chair maker according to census records.

In the 1900 census Mr. Matthews and his wife, Nellie, were renting a place at 139 Green Street. That address no longer exists today. He was a saw operator at a chair shop. Nellie reportedly had given birth to one child that did not survive but a record has not yet been found.
