Mrs. Emma Henderson, About 80, Here Since Big Flood

Mrs. Mary Emma Henderson, about 80 years old, died here at 10:50 o'clock Wednesday morning. The funeral service has not been arranged.
Mrs. Henderson, a native of Alabama, had been a resident here for the last 50 years. She went through the Ben Ficklin flood of August 23, 1883, at the time her husband, the late Jerry Henderson, was deputy sheriff and tax collector. She thought of the thirteen prisoners in the jail at Ben Ficklin at the time and told her husband to let them out. He rode a horse to the jail, with the water already forcing the prisoners to climb up in their cells to keep from drowning.
She was one of the first converts after the organization of the First Christian Church here.
Death came at the home at 1433 South Tyler street. Surviving are five sons, all of San Angelo, as follows: Wade, Mark, L. W., J. T., and Nat Henderson. Two daughters died in childhood. Her husband died March 12, 1902. He served as deputy sheriff and tax collector during the tenure of office of Rome Shield, J. W. Johnson, and James Spears.
The Robert Massie Co. has charge of the funeral.
