Wilbur Sherman Gardner was the son of James Sweet Gardner (1793–1840) and Malinda Mason (Hammond) Gardner (1792-1875). Although born in New York state, by the time he was 10 years old, the family was living in Lee County, Illinois.
Within the following decade, they were settled in Coffin's Grove Township, Delaware County, Iowa, and it was there that Wilbur met Mary Jane "Jannie" Zerfoss (1844–1909), whom he married on July 4, 1861.
Wilbur and Jannie spent most of their lives in Delaware County and raised their family there.
