James Frederick Jones, 90, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, August 12, 2012, at Lewis Gale Medical Center. Jim was born in St. Louis, Mo. and lived in Roanoke since 1966. He was the son of the late James M. and Idelle Buckner Jones.
Jim was a car inspector for Norfolk & Western Railroad, retiring after 40 years of service. He served in the US Army during World War II and was an avid sports fan. Jim particularly loved baseball and played softball on the church team until he was 60 years old. He served as an Elder for Grace Church in Roanoke.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Joycelee Howell Jones in 1990, and two infant daughters. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Emily Goff Jones; children, Diana (Danny) Dugan, Kathy Cunningham, Janet (F.W.) Scott, Wallace E. (Vickie) Martin Jr., Carolyn (Scott) White, all of Roanoke, and Cheryl (Bob) Reynolds of Charlotte Court House; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Maynard Howell, of St. Peters, Mo.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Grace Church, 2731 Edgewood Street, SW, Roanoke, with the Reverend Tim Martin and the Reverend Everett Kier officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery, Pond, Mo. Friends may call at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Road, Roanoke Monday August, 13, 2012, 6 to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Grace Church Missions Fund, 2731 Edgewood Street, SW, Roanoke, VA 24015; or to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Roanoke, 17 Highland Avenue, SW, Roanoke, VA 24016.
