Thomas M. Appleby, 72, of 1114 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, former Huntingdon County treasurer, died at 2:50 a.m. Monday, April 21, 1980 in the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, where he had been admitted on Sunday. He had been in failing health for the past month.
Born Sept. 10, 1907 in Mount Union, he was the son of Robert C. and Christiana (Williams) Appleby. He was united in marriage to Verna Kyper on April 9, 1929 in Frederick, Md. His wife survives.
He is also survived by the following children: Thomas M. Appleby Jr. of Atlantic City, N.J.; Robert H. Appleby of Mechanicsburg; David R. Appleby of Palmyra; Mrs. Coy (Ardeth) Hicks of Mount Union; John M. Appleby of Downingtown; Landry K. Appleby of Lebanon; and Duncan L. Appleby of Hummelstown. Twenty-five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Four grandchildren preceded him in death.
Also surviving are a brother and sister: John C. Appleby of Honey Grove and Mrs. Earl (Katharine) Brown of Manilla, Ind. Four brothers preceded him in death.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Huntingdon.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a life member of the Huntingdon Hook and Ladder Fire Co.
He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, retiring as an assistant superintendent after 32 years of service.
He served as Huntingdon County treasurer from 1956 to 1960.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, at 3 p.m. at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Harold G. Williams officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union IOOF Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the services.
