Velma Mae Boydstun Smith, 90, of Fayetteville died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the Butterfield Trail Village Health Care Center.

She was born October 1, 1914, in LaRue, AR, the daughter of Henry E. and Lottie Allred Boydstun. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer C. Smith, in 1986, by three sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her two sisters, Dot Boydstun Watkins and husband, Rex, of Fayetteville and Ruby Boydstun Matthew of Centerton.

She was a longtime employee of the University of Arkansas, where she was secretary to two presidents and two acting presidents. She was a graduate of the University of the Ozarks; a Presbyterian; a teacher of church school for many years; a former member of AAUW. She was active in many crafts and did volunteer work.

Following the death of her husband, she worked for 5 years in the Trust Department of Arvest Bank in Rogers.

She was a registrar at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and worked as a special assistant in registrar offices at the University of Illinois, Chicago; University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg; University of Florida, Gainesville. She also worked for the Extension Service of Oklahoma State University, Ardmore, Oklahoma; and as secretary and office manager for a construction company, building a dam for the Corps of Engineers, Trinidad, Colorado.

She and her husband moved to Butterfield Trail Village in 1986 from Bella Vista, where they lived for 11 years.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Bland Cemetery in Bentonville, AR, with Rev. Robert Brennan officiating. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Butterfield Trail Convocation Room in Fayetteville.

Services will be under the direction of Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Butterfield Trail Village Foundation Health Care for automatic beds, 1923 East Joyce Blvd., Fayetteville, AR 72703; or Washington Regional Hospice, 34 West Colt Square Drive, Suite 1, Fayetteville, AR 72703.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.
