He was born in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Theodore O. and Stella Mather Miles. He married Martha A. Rowe on September 25, 1943, in Abingdon, Illinois.
He served in the Marines during World War II.
After his military service, he practiced optometry in Shakopee for many years before joining Health Partners.
