Jacob was the tenth child of John and Sarah Ettinger Enders. He served in Co. H, 9th PA Cavalry during the Civil War. Jacob first married Emma J. Messner and had 5 children. After her death in 1881, he remarried to Sarah Bowman Shoop Wilbert and had 3 more children. Sarah had been previously married to Jacob's first cousin, Henry Wilbert (Wilvert). Except for his military service, he was a farmer all his life.

In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Jackson Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 24, 1864, overstating his age by three years, as a private with Co. H, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865, at Lexington, North Carolina.

He married Emma J. Messner October 5, 1865, in Dauphin, Dauphin County, and fathered Amelia Kline (b. 09/20/66 - married Charles Alexander Monroe Kline), John F. (b. 10/26/68), Lilly (b. 12/08/76, d. 03/31/79), Mason Gilbert (b. 10/20/78), and Elnora (b. 03/20/80). Emma died August 14, 1881, and he married the doubly widowed Sarah Shoop Wilbert, née Bowman, January 15, 1882, fathering Millard (b. 10/02/82 and an unnamed twin who died that day) and Mabel E. (b. 02/02/84). He died in Jackson Township, Dauphin County, from "acute nephritis (cause not known)" with "arterial hardening & cirrhosis of liver" contributing factors.
