William Archibald Applegate was born July 4, 1836, departed this life Dec. 11, 1916, aged 80 years, 5 months and 7 days. He was married Jan. 7, 1858, to Elizabeth Rader, and she departed this life Dec. 4, 1901. To them were born six children. Alice C., Mary E. and Judson S. have preceded him to the better land. He leaves to mourn their loss, William Assineous and Nicolas Sherman Applegate and Cora Augusta Dare, of Chesterville; his faithful and loving wife, Sarah Applegate, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren preceded him to the better land.

He enlisted in the service of his country May 10, 1862, in Co. E, 123d Ill. Inf. and was promoted to second lieutenant June 17, 1863. He served three years in the Civil war and was mustered out June 28, 1865.

He was converted during his army life under the teaching of Elder Geo. Sandoe, at a prayer meeting, and after coming home from the army Rev. Sandoe organized a Church of God at Hazel Dell about the year 1867, and he became a charter member. Was united in marriage to Sarah Kilbourn Nov. 5, 1902.

Uncle Arch, as he was generally known, as his health began to fail, thought he might have better health by changing climate, so he spent several winters and one summer in Florida with but little success. He became gradually worse and brought a home there, and after he was confined to bed he would say, "When I get able, I will spend the winter in Florida."

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Church of God, Rev. B. H. Rogers and Rev. A. J. McCash officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the old Hazel Dell cemetery. Uncle Arch will be missed in the church and in the community.
