Don died peacefully at his home in Matthews,NC. Throughout his battle with cancer he was surrounded by family and friends. They will remember his laughter, how he loved his grandchildren, and the way he was a quiet leader.

He was a proud Member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He had a passion for working with the missions and had a special love for the people of Kenya.

For over 30 years Don Rodgers nurtured and guided both students and teachers as a principal in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. He had the distinction of being the first principal of Randolph Junior High School which was, at the time, the only desegregated school in the system. His last school service was to West Mecklenburg High School.

Don was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard AUS(ret). He served in various positions with distinction including serving in the 113th Field Artillery and as the Assistant Commandant of the North Carolina Military Academy at Fort Bragg, North Carolina He was awarded the North Carolina Commendation Medal and the US Army Commendation Medal. LTC Rodgers served the State of North Carolina and the United States for over 30 years.

The funeral service was held Monday, March 18,2003 at Sardis Presbyterian Church followed by a gravesite service also at Sardis.

TRIBUTE
My name is Rock Lindsay. Don is my friend. Our friendship begins and ends with the US Army Field Artillery. Our times together were while serving in the 113th Field Artillery Regiment. The Field Artillery is a special branch and there is a certain bond and friendship among all RedLegs. This bond continued after our service with the Army was complete. There are members who served with us here today who are also Don's friends. When you train and play hard while being together for days at a time, this fosters RedLeg comraderie.

Our RedLeg group has had many social events even to this day to continue our friendship. Don and I have traveled together, trained together, socialized together and enjoyed each others fellowship for over 35 years.

He was an outstanding artillerist and an officer I felt a privilege to serve beside. Don had the respect of the entire artillery community for his leadership and character.

Don was an educator and this carried over to the military realm when he was assigned to the North Carolina Military Academy at Fort Bragg, NC. His expertise was invaluable as we trained Officer Candidates and NCO's.

Our friendship will continue forever but the Artillery said their final farewell on Friday night at Fort Bragg when 100 Artillery Officers and NCO's gave a final toast to an Artilleryman: LTC Don Rodgers.

I will miss a dear friend but my life was made richer by his being a part of it.

CARRY ON!

Your Buddy, Rock
