Her original surname of Nottage can be traced all the way back to John ALden 1598 and Pricilla Mullins 1602 who came on the first voyage of the Mayflower from England to Massachusetts. Both of her grandfathers fought in the civil war for the Union side. Willard M. Nottage 1837-1914 was a Sgt. in the Massachusetts 4th Infantry Regiment Company H. Her grandfather on her mother's side was Pvt. Lewis A. Hunt 1838-1919 who served in the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment Company I.
