Harold Edwin Rose 1914 – 1985
Harold Edwin Rose was born on March 7, 1914 in Fargo, North Dakota, the first of three children born to Charles R. T. and Marie [Rabot] Rose. His early years were spent between his parent’s Rose Grocery Store, at 508 Broadway, an attached Rooming House and a couple years in Northern Minnesota at the very primitive Homestead. Various Aunts and Uncles from both sides of the family were often visiting or working in the store. Charles was passionate for hunting birds and his brother, Edwin [whom Harold was named for] was as well. Edwin stayed in North Dakota and enjoyed the passion for birds with his brother and young Harold. The families were close, both Charles and Edwin named daughters June.
Early in the 1920’s Charles and Marie built their home at 721 7th St N in Fargo, and Harold spent the rest of his childhood in their new home. There they welcomed Harold’s sister, June Marie in 1923 and two years later, Gloria Theresa was born.
Harold enlisted in the Army on May 3, 1943, as a Pvt. Company C, 62nd Bn, MRTC. After he was discharged, he returned to Fargo and spent his later years working with his father as manager of Rose Music Service. Rose Music Service had a large number of establishments that they furnished and took care of the juke boxes and pin ball machines, most requiring monthly servicing. Parkinson’s forced him into early retirement.
Harold enjoyed a young relationship with Sophie Glowka and they had a little girl, Vivian, in 1931. Later Harold married Velva Mae “Billie” Kemmer in 1937 in Breckenridge, MN. They had a son, Donald William Rose. They divorced and later, they both remarried, Donald took the surname of his step father, Fowler. Harold married Mary Hildegard Schlagel in 1941. They did not have children, and after several break ups, remained together until Harold’s death.
Harold died on January 18, 1967 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Although Parkinson’s eventually took him far too early, Harold fought addictions most of his adult life and his work made it even more difficult for him.
Harold was survived by his parents, Charles and Marie Rose, his sisters, June M. [Rose] Lemke, Glory [Rose] Field, his daughter Vivian, and his son, Donald W. [Rose] Fowler. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, including Catherine, Louise, Peggy, Laura, Douglas, John and Donald W. Fowler Jr., Tracy Fowler, Mark Fowler, and Clay W. Fowler. Harold also leaves a niece and 4 nephews, and many Great Grandchildren.
An obituary with less information may have been published at the time of Harold’s death. I am his niece, and knew him well and am also the family historian. The information here is well documented. I met Donald once, briefly, along with his wife and children. I was taken back by how much I thought he looked like “Unk”. I have written this as a tribute to my only Uncle and the descendants that he left.
