Childress – Mrs. Vera Maye Stone Walker, age 58, of Childress passed away Tuesday morning, February 27, in Temple. She had been a patient at Scott and White Clinic for some time, but apparently was doing better and her family was making plans to bring her home this weekend. She was born July 15, 1909 in Oklahoma. She came to Childress in 1928 from Vernon and was married to Ben Rufus Walker, November 11, 1933 in Childress. Mrs. Walker was a member of the First Baptist church and an active worker. She had been bookkeeper for the Childress Independent School District for 17 years. Mrs. Walker had been active in all school activities. She had many other interests. She was president this year of the Bobcat Mothers and had been secretary and treasurer of the Childress Riding Club since its organization. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and served as secretary. Funeral services were today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe S. Allen officiating. Burial was in the Childress cemetery under the direction of Newberry Funeral Home. Her survivors include her husband, Ben; one son, Ben Bob Walker, who is a senior student this year in Childress High School; one daughter, Marilyn Joye Walker, a sophomore student in Clarendon College, and also an employee of the Childress Independent School District in the administration office. She has one brother, Ray C. Stone of Wichita Falls. Pallbearers were D. C. Bradley, D. W. Scott, L. H. Felton, Bobby Hart, Lewis Meinzer, Jimmie Harman, Aubrey Rogers, and M. E. Allison.
