Phylus Abubo, 75, of Calipatria passed away Wednesday, May 16.

Phylus Marie was born on June 11, 1936 in Wibaux, Montana to her parents Clare and Annette Polen.

She moved to the Imperial Valley when she was 5 years old. She attended local schools in El Centro, Imperial, Niland and Calipatria High School. She met and fell in love with Melchor Abubo Jr. and they were married in 1951. Together they raised seven children.

Phylus worked at Pioneers Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She began her career as a Nurse's Aide for several years after which she challenged the State Board of Nursing and received her L.V.N. License. She later attended the L.V.N. to R.N. program at I.V.C. and graduated with an A.A. in Nursing, and again challenged the State Board of Nursing and received her R.N. License.

Her recent employment was with the Catholic Charities where she worked as a Tutor "Foster Grandparent" at Del Rio School. She was known there as "Grandma Phylus".

Phylus is preceded in death by her husband, Melchor Abubo Jr.; son, Melchor "Mike" Abubo III; granddaughter, Jessica Barros McCurdy; son-in-law, Richard Ruiz; father, Clare Polen; mother and step-father, Annette and Paul "Max" Retutal.

Phylus is survived by her children, Patrick Abubo, Darlene (Sylvester) Barros, Dennis (Kathy) Abubo, Wendy (Fidel) Flores, Elizabeth Ruiz, Chris (Anna) Abubo, (Stephanie).

She is also survived by her siblings, Robert, Janet, Rosetta, Shirley, Rudy, Bonnie, Harold, Linda, and Sandy. She has 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Brawley Assembly of God Church for the Children's Bus Ministry. Phylus will be deeply missed by all her family, friends and all the lives that she touched throughout the years.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley.

Chapel Service is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m., also at Frye Chapel. Pastor Troy Doudy of Brawley Assembly of God Church and Pastor Michael Lasky will officiate the service. She will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service.
