Grove City -- John Houghton Atwell, 56, of Grove City RD 1, died at 10:45 am Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1913 in Wolf Creek Township, Mercer County, son of George Park and Anna Houghton Atwell.
He worked as a machinist at Cooper-Bessemer Co for 30 years. A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Springfield United Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post 22, and VFW Post 519 of Grove City.
On Dec. 24, 1945, he married Mildred Lesnett, who survives, with a son, Donald F. Atwell, stationed with the US Navy aboard the USS Forrestal; his mother, Mrs. Anna Atwell of Mercer; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Ruth) McNery of Des Moines, IA, and Mrs. Ray (June) Truran of Warren, OH; four brothers, Stewart of Phoenix, AZ, Ross of Sharon, Wayne of Grove City RD 3, and Donald of Grove City. He was preceded in death by his father and three children.
Services will be at 3 pm Thursday in H. Glenn Cunningham and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Fulton C. Kissick, pastor of Grove City Larger Parish, officiating, Interment will be in Amity Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by Le-Vets.
