Obituary
The death of Mr William Wallace Whitney, at New Orleans, on the 13th of September, by the prevailing fever, was mentioned in this paper, some days ago, but the notice did not meet our eye until this morning. This is the gentleman whose claim to a very large estate, in right of his wife, the daugher of the late Daniel Clark, has attracted so large a share of public attention. Our readers will doubtless remember the publications growing out of this claim, which occupied several columns of this paper, about a year ago. Mr. Relf, an executor of the deceased Mr. Clarke, is defendant in the suit instituted by Mr. Whitney -- The deceased was in his 27th year of his age, and has left a widow and two children. He went to New Orleans to prosecute his suit, in the District Court of the United States, and was about returning to this city when the disease attacked him.

His obituary appeared in the Bee (L'Abeille) newspaper of New Orleans on
September 16, 1837, page 2, column 5. Much of what is already cited
from the NY newspaper is also given in this obituary. However, it does
say he was born in the year 1810 in Broome County in the State of New
York and that he was the son of Gen. Joshua Whitney, of Big Hampton in
that state. It also states the deceased came to this city [New Orleans]
about 3 years ago for the purpose of prosecuting the claims of his wife,
as the legal heir of the late Daniel Clarke, to a very large estate; to
recover which a suit is now pending here, in the United States District
Court. It also states he was preparing to leave the city for the
purpose of returning to New York. The second paragraph may confirm his
burial in New Orleans and states: "and though he mingled but little in
society or the busy scenes of life, yet it may afford some consolation
to his absent friends to know, that not withstanding he sleeps among
strangers, the mildness of his disposition and suavity of manners had
won for him many friends who mourn his premature fate, and in whose
memory, he will long live."
