John C. Higgins (1843-1917)

Marriage:
He married Addie X (1847-1919) and had the following children: B. Clinton Higgins (1871-?); Jennie F. Higgins (1874-1894); and Cora May Higgins (1872-1891). They appeared in the 1880 US Census living in East Amwell, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. John was working as a "huckster".

MIlitary:
He was enrolled as a recruit Private in Company A, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 11, 1862, but is listed as deserted en route to the regiment. Record then show he enlisted in the 35th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 27, 1863 and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company A. He served in this capacity through the last two years of the conflict and saw the war through to it's conclusion. He was promoted to Sergeant on July 10, 1865, and was honorably mustered out of Federal service ten days later.
