Bastian, enlisted at Williamsport, Northampton County Pennsylvania at the stated age of 18 on October 11, 1861 as a substitute for 1 year in Company C, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He reenlisted for 3 years and was appointed corporal on April 1, 1865. He was discharged by general order on June 23, 1865.
