Robert Alton Lee Hookom was born on May 12, 1936, in New London Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Arthur C. and Isabel (Thompson) Hookom When he was a young boy in elementary school, his family moved to San Diego, California (1942 to 1945), then to Lidgerwood, North Dakota (1945 to 1950) and finally to Willmar (1950) where he would spend the rest of his life. Bob graduated from Willmar High School in 1954.
On March 16, 1957, Bob was united in marriage to LaVonne J. Bomsta at Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian, Minnesota. This union was blessed with three sons. They lived in Willmar, where Bob was a Master Electrician and Electrical Engineer in the Design/Build Dept. for Willmar Electric Service. He traveled the country taking tests to acquire contractors' licenses in 32 states. Semi-retiring in 2001, Bob continued working at WES until Oct. 2005, a total of 43 years.
He was baptized on June 28, 1936 at the Lutheran Free Church in New London, and was confirmed on June 27, 1950, at Bergen Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, and was a member of Calvary Lutheran in Willmar at the time of his death. He served as a Deacon and was active with the Lillejulaften Committee.
Bob loved to sing. As a boy his family would sing around the dinner table and at the age of two he was already demonstrating his gift of song. He was a member of the Calvary senior choir from 1953 until 2005 and also sang in the Calvary Male Chorus, the Willmar Community Chorus and God's Hams. He sang at many funerals, and weddings. His music ministry touched many lives. Bob loved being with his family. He took great pride in each of their accomplishments. He took pleasure in attending many concerts, plays, recitals and other events his children and grandchildren participated in. He meticulously handcrafted each of his grandchildren a barn or dollhouse as a family heirloom and testament of his love. Bob and LaVonne went on many trips. He enjoyed planning trips to Hawaii, Norway and Europe. Norway was a favorite destination where they would visit relatives, learn more about the family tree and explore the family farms. When he was younger he enjoyed trips to places like Yellowstone, Holden Village and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Nature was special to Bob. On vacations it was common for him to take pictures of birds, flowers, and scenery. He would learn the names of birds, plants and trees that he saw.
He was active with the Sons of Norway, Solorlag of America, Vestlandslag and Gudbrandsdalslag. Bob also served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader.
Surviving is his wife, LaVonne; sons, Michael (and Jeanie) of Algonquin, Illinois, Brian of Eden Prairie, and Ross (and Sheryl) of Elk River; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Emily, Amber, Andrew, Zachary, Amanda and Benjamin. Also surviving are his sisters
and brother, Myrtle Tosse, Lidgerwood, North Dakota, Kenneth (and Allene) Hookom, Chanhassen, Clam (and Arnold) Cobb, Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Evelyn Solbrack.
