TERRY, LUKE EDWARD - "Luke Terry, 82, formerly of Scott Co., dies in Delaware." LUKE EDWARD TERRY, 82, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, died October 20, 1998, in Beebe Hospital, Lewes, Delaware. Born in Oneida, August 21, 1916, he was the son of the late A.C. and NELL S. TERRY. A Oneida High School graduate, he taught at Robbins High School, and attended the 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and George Washington University Law School. He was a vocational agriculture instructor at Bunker Hill High School and also taught vocation al and science courses at Martinsburg and Hedgesville High Schools. Upon discharge from military service, be began work with the USDA Soil Conservation Service and transferred to the U.S. Veteran's Administration as Vocational Training Officer. He also began a general fire and casualty insurance agency. Mr. TERRY served as a B-24 bomber pilot in the 10th Air Force during WWII. He was shot down over Romania on June 15, 1944, and was a Prisoner of War in Bulgaria from June to September, 1944. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Unit Citation, Campaign Ribbon, and Greek Liberation Medal, Caterpillar Club. He retired from combat duty as a 1st Lieutenant. He was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church where he served as deacon, elder and trustee, and was teacher of the Men's Bible Class for over 40 years. He was past president of the Martinsburg Federation Men's Bible Classes. He was a life member of Martinsburg BPOE, Lodge #778 and member of the United Commercial Travelers. He was a member of Berkeley Lodge #37 AF & AM, Lodge of Perfection, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; Osiris Temple, Mystic Order of Shrine and Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club. He was a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, JOUAM, Berkeley County Farm Bureau, life member of National Rifle Association, past Commander of Post #8, DAV, American Legion, past Commander Martinsburg Civil Air Patrol and past president of Camp Frame 4-H Club Association. He was awarded the West Virginia Farm Bureau "Distinguished Service Award". He was active in volunteer work with Boy Scouts, was Merit Badge Counselor, and past member of Martinsburg Rotary Club. Mr. Terry established a fulltime law practice in 1955, was a member of West Virginia State Bar, West Virginia Bar Association and Berkeley County and American Bar Association. He served as past president, Berkeley Bar Association; member, Board of Governors of West, Virginia State Bar; and vice-president of West Virginia Bar Association. In 1956, he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates and served two terms. He was Director of Legislation for West Virginia Farm Bureau for several years, and was a 21-year member of the Local Board #28, Selective Service System and was chairman of Selective Service Board in Berkeley County. He is survived by his wife, ELIZABETH JOHNSON TERRY of Martinsburg, W.V.; one son, Dr. LUKE E. TERRY, Jr., of Sykesville, Md.; three daughters: KATHRYN T. BURKHART of Rehoboth Beach, Del., MARY ANN EDWARDS of Nashville, Tenn., and REBECCA J. FARROW, of San Clemente, Calif.; seven grandchildren, nieces and nephews: GEORGE A. and SARAH TERRY, W. Claude and FAYRENE TERRY, RALPH and JANE T. HOFFMAN, and HELEN CARSONall of Tenn.; and numerous cousins. Funeral service was conducted October 24, 1998, at Winchester Avenue Christian Church with Rev. DOUGLAS J. HOLLIDA officiating. Interment followed in Rosedale Cemetery. Brown Funeral Home of Martinsburg, West Virginia, was in charge of arrangements.
