Pilot and WWII Veteran. A longtime Aurora, Colorado resident he was a B-17 bomber pilot, flying 25 missions over Germany and the Netherlands during WWII while assigned to the 349th Bomb Squadron of the 100th Bomb Group in the Army Air Corps. Following the war, he flew missions with the Stategic Air Command and Military Air Tranport Service; serving in the Air Force for 20 years. After retiring from the Air Force, Akers served as instructor pilot for United Airlines in Denver until his second retirement in 1989.

Preceded in death by wife, Irene. Survived by three sons, John, Mike and Bob; and by one granson, Connor.
