Funeral Services Wednesday Afternoon for Pioneer Business Man of Calliope and Hawarden
Ben Rummel, 88, a pioneer business man of Hawarden, a civic leader and at one time mayor, died at the Hawarden hospital at 6:40 Monday evening. He submitted to an operation two years ago from which he never fully recovered and about two months ago he was taken to the hospital.
Funeral services were 'held at the Barnard Funeral home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and at 2:30 at the Associated church with Rev. Noel P. Orcutt im charge. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery.
Bernard Rummel, son of Christian and Marie Rummel, was born in Washington county, Wisconsin, May 21, 1858. In 1871 he moved with his parents to Alden, Iowa, where he worked in the wagon and carriage shop of his brother and learned the blacksmith trade. In 1887 he came to Calliope and opened a shop in partnership with George C. Whieland who had who had learned of the trade in the same shop in Alden. In 1890 bhey opened a branch shop in Hawarden with Mr. Whieland charge. In 1911 Mr. Rummel purchased his partner's interest and continued until 1936 when he retired after 65 years of uninterrupted work. Mr. Rummel married Emma Barnes Miller at Webster City, Towa, June 1, 1888. She died in 1890 in Calliope. On August 19, 1891, Mr. Rummel married Lizzie Hartman Hurlbut in Calliope. Mrs. .Rummel died January 14, 1937. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Miller of Elk Point and Mrs. Cora Burkct, Mrs. Emma Vernon and Mrs. Lottie Van Sickle of Hawarden; one sister, Mrs. Elizatbeth Friess of Fon du Lac, Wis., 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A son, Harry Rummel, a daughter, Mrs. Ella Anderson, and one sister preceded him in death.
'During has long residence in this city, .Mr. Rummel was a consistent booster for the city. At one time he served as mayor and for .many years he was a member of the city council. Ho also served on the board of education and for many years was a .member of the fire department. He was a member of the Masonic lodge 60 years and held the office of treasurer of Dale lodge 42 years.
