"Boy Drowns After Boat Drifts in Lake"
"Funeral services for a 9 year old Stone Mountain boy who drowned Monday in a lake near his home will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church in Gwinnett County.
The Rev. J.W. Fields will officiate and burial will be in the churchyard.
DeKalb police reported that Billy Lamar Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Wood, drowned Monday morning in Venable Lake, between U.S. Highway 78 and Bermuda Rd. as other boys, all unable to swim, watched helplessly from the bank.
Police Capt. Fred Howard said the boy's body was recovered around 1:15 p.m. some two hours after he had jumped out of a boat that had drifted away from the bank. Another boy in the boat also jumped into the lake, but managed to reach the shore.
