Lloyd Jules Hoffmeister, Jr. age 70 years, a native of New Orleans and resident of St. Bernard Parish since 1961, died on Monday, August 20,2012 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years Judy Darby Hoffmeister. Father of Heidi Anne Hoffmeister and Lloyd Jules Hoffmeister, III (Monique Cousins). Lovingly known as the "Grumpy Old Toad" and sadly missed by his grandsons, Darby Thomas Hoffmeister and Ellis Jules Hoffmeister. Also, survived by his brother, Michael W. Hoffmeister (Charlene) and brother-in-laws, Jim Darby (Gayle) and David Cefalu (Betty) and special uncle to Peanut, Bubby, Michael, Troy Fink and their children, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd J. Hoffmeister, Sr. and Dorothy Monies Hoffmeister, grandparents, Joseph and Pauline (Appel) Monies and William and Anna (Heno) Hoffmeister.
Retired after 20 years from the New Orleans Police Dept and joined St. Bernard Sheriff's Office in 1983 for 29 years of service, most recently serving as Lieutenant for Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann. Dedicated 49 years to law enforcement service. Special thanks to both Sheriffs Jack Stephens, Jimmy Pohlmann and the men and women of the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office for their support. He was proud, loyal, dedicated and devoted to his work. Member of Fraternal Order of Police Crescent City Lodge, Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church Chalmette and was a former member of OLPS Tomato Festival committee and OLPS CYO Adult Advisor. An "involuntary" volunteer for all his wife's community activities.
Deep appreciation to Dr. Jayne Gurtler, Dr. Laura Brinz and staff for their kindness and compassion…all "spiritual millionaires".
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue Street, Chalmette, La. on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM followed by the Funeral Mass in the Chapel. Msgr. Andrew Taormina officiating. Private Inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Arc Chalmette Community Center (Sterling Hall Renovations) for adults with intellectual disabilities, located at the former location of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 3700 Jean Lafitte Pkwy, Chalmette, LA 70043, in memory of Lloyd Jules Hoffmeister, Jr. will be appreciated.
