Death calls Robt. J. Wise. Prominent Sparta and Christian Co. citizen passes away Saturday, Aug. 17—elected County Assessor in 1908—Prominent in Republican Party in County. Death claimed Robert Jefferson Wise, prominent Sparta and Christian county citizen, at his home in Sparta on Saturday, Aug. 17, after an illness of several weeks. He was born on Feb. 2, 1867, at Billings, the son of James J. and Betty Farley Wise. He was reared in the vicinity of his birth and in early manhood was united in marriage to Miss Martha Ann McBride. To this union were born five children, who with their mother survive. They are two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Shipman and Mrs. Ella Gardner, both of Springfield, and three sons, Dr. H.J. Wise and Ellis Wise, both of Sparta, and Dr. J.R. Wise of Branson. Six grandchildren, Mildred Shipman, Eloise Gardner, Thetis Wise, R.J. Wise, Wilda Wise and Bobby Hugh Wise also survive. Funeral and burial services were held on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Lorenza chapel, 5 miles east of Clever, with Rev. Earl French officiating. Burial was under the supervision of the Rathbun-Chaffin funeral directors of Sparta. After his marriage Mr. Wise settled on a farm between Clever and Billings. There he lived and reared his family until about nine years ago when he moved to Sparta. In 1908 he was elected county assessor and served the county in a most efficient way. He was always a staunch Republican, loyal to its principals, and taking much interest in the political affairs of his community and county. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church and the Odd Fellow Lodge. The active pallbearers at the burial service were Joe Shipman, Albert Smith, Roscoe Stacy, Leslie Clemens, Harvey Jenkins and Knial Kissee. The honorary pallbearers were J.W. Clemens, John Glenn, I.H. Johnson, M.S. Stacey, Robert Shipman and Chas. McBride. The passing of Mr. Wise will be keenly felt by many who remain. A kind and loving husband, a devoted father, a lasting friend and neighbor and a progressive citizen. In the community in which he lived Robert Wise was a leader, one to whom many went for advice and counsel. His leadership in political circles will be missed; the lack of his help in church affairs must be reckoned with; his fraternity brethren will miss his companionship and the home will have its vacant chair. Always willing to do more than his share in the things in which he was deeply interested and which meant a better community in which his family and friends might live. He was of the old type, keenly set in his beliefs and unafraid to stand by his convictions. As the years creep along such as he are called upon to make the complete surrender and it is with deep and universal feeling of remorse and sadness that a community realizes they have departed forever.

Funeral services for R. J. Wise, 67, prominent Sparta businessman, who died at 10:20 o'clock Saturday night at his home, will be at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Frazier Chapel near Clever, with the Rev. Earl French officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Rathbun-Chaffin Funeral Home of Sparta. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Martha Ann Wise; three sons, Dr. H. J. Wise and Ellis L. Wise, both of Sparta, and Dr. R. J. Wise, of Branson; two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Shipman and Mrs. Ella Gardner, both of Springfield; and six grandchildren.
