Mr. Carpenter enlisted in the army at the age of 16 when World War I erupted. He was in the Signal Corps of the U. S. Army and involved in three major campaigns in the trenches of France and Germany and many minor campaigns.
After the war, he held many different positions including deputy sheriff, electrician, and service station owner. Mr. Carpenter installed the first telephones in Colorado and Arizona.
He returned to continue his education at seminary, but dropped out before completion due to the upcoming birth of his and his wife's first child. He began his career as a pastor of First Baptist Church, Norco, Louisiana. Over the next 55 years (1937-1992), he served as a minister at eighteen Southern Baptist churches in five states, eight of which were involved in building programs during his tenure.
Places of service include Director of Missions in New Mexico, first Home Mission Board missionary in the Territory of Alaska, beginning the work and building in both Ketchikan and Seward, president of the Alaska Baptist Convention for two years and editor of the Alaska Baptist Messenger for eight years, pastoring in Albuquerque, New Mexico, director of the Baptist Mission Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
During his years of service, he suffered a heart attack at age 55, but continued in the work of the Lord until age 94. Bro. Carpenter touched and influenced many lives with his deep concern for others. He gave unselfishly to everyone he met, helping wherever he could. After his retirement, he moved to California to be near his daughter and her family.
His beloved wife Helen May Patterson Carpenter passed away in 1982 and the Lord called Bro. Carpenter home on May 24, 1996.
Funeral services were held at West Roseville Baptist Church in Roseville, California and his body was laid to rest at Rocklin Cemetery, Rocklin, CA.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Kelso and husband Don, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
