Vallie E. Shemberger, a New York Central hostler until his health failed, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday at the home of his son, Robert, 901 West Indiana.

Mr. Shemberger had been in poor health for 6 years, and had not worked since Jan. 5, 1943. Accompanied by Mrs. Shemberger and their younger son, William E., he went to Tucson, Arizona, in October, 1943. He and Mrs. Shemberger returned to Elkhart last July, the son having been inducted in the army while residing in the West.

Mr. Shemberger was born Feb. 19, 1893, in Sturgis, Mich., the son of James and Nettie Johnson Shemberger. He and his wife Flossie Davis Shemberger, were married Sept 5, 1914, in Elkhart, and had resided her since, with the exception of the period spent in Tucson.

Surviving besides the wife are the 2 sons; a daughter, mrs. Arnold (Hazel) Thompson, Bay City, mich; 3 grandchildren; the father, James, of South Bend, a sister, Mrs. Clarence (Evah) Rigby, Elkhart; 2 half-brothers, James Shemberger of South Bend and Richard Shemberger, who is in service, and a half-sister, Hazel, South Bend. The son, Pfc. William E. Shemberger, was expected to arrive tonight from Ft. Riley, Kansas.

Mr. Shemberger was a member of the Church of God and of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers.

A prayer service will be held at the Westbrook Chapel, 221 West Lexington, at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by services at 2:30 in the First Church of God, in charge of the Rev. G. K. White. Burial will be in Rice Cembery. Friends may call at the Westbrook Funeral Home after 7:30 this evening and until the hour of the prayer service.
