Father Charles "Charlie" Albright, CSP, was born in Craig, Colorado, on December 18, 1920, into a Congregationalist family. Later the family moved to Roosevelt, Utah, where, influenced by Paulist missionaries, Charlie, his mother, and younger brother were all received into full communion with the Catholic Church on September 7, 1940. After studies at the University of Utah and Regis College in Denver, he was admitted to the Paulist novitiate in September 1942. Completing the usual philosophical and theological program at St. Paul's College, he was ordained a Catholic priest on May 3, 1949, with classmates Fathers Barney Lohmann, Warren Seedorf, Tom Marley, Bob Scott, and Ed Maher.
Fr. Albright exercised most of his priesthood in the Newman apostolate, first at Berkeley, California, from 1949 to 1953, followed by two years at Wayne State University in Detroit, 1953-1955. He then served from 1955 to 1964 as Executive Secretary of the National Federation of Newman Chaplains at the National Catholic Welfare Conference in Washington, DC. From 1964 to 1968, he directed the Newman Center at Louisiana State University at New Orleans. He then spent two years as pastor-superior of the university-parish of St. John's in Morgantown, West Virginia.
From 1970-1974, Fr. Albright was superior-coordinator at Boston's Park Street Center. He then served as associate on the staffs at Santa Barbara, Clemson, Good Shepherd in New York, and Rome. In 1985, he went to Ohio State University in Columbus for nine years of active ministry before assuming senior ministry status in 1994. Three years later, he made his final move to Old St. Mary's parish in San Francisco. He died there on February 21, 2002, at the age of 81 after almost fifty-three years in the Paulist priesthood.
Fr. Sean Foley, CSP, in his eulogy summed up Father Charlie's contribution to the community: "Our loving God has once again reached out to us with a gift, this time in Charles Wingo Albright. He came into our lives as campus minister, parish priest, musician, teacher, motivator, trusted friend, traveling companion and, yes, that gourmet chef…. To our God who thoughtfully sent us this faithful man as gift, we offer our sincere thanks and we trust that he now has been given ‘life to the full.'"
