Civil War: Company K, 7th California Infantry

James M. Mix was the son of Joel Mix (1800-1880) and Louisa Shattuck (1799-1889). James remained in Huntington until at least 1860, at which time he headed west to California. He enlisted, age 22 years 5 months, as a private at Downieville, California, November 9, 1864, and was mustered into Company K, 7th California Infantry, November 21. Private Mix was later promoted to First Sergeant. He was discharged for disability, per order of Colonel Drum, October 31, 1865 (Orton, 793). "James Mito Mix" registered to vote in Sierra County in 1866 (Sierra County Great Register). James filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in California February 1, 1867, and received application No. 121,769 and certificate No. 99,010. He had returned to Huntington, Vermont, by 1870 and was still there, working at home, in 1880 (US Census). James married (1) Etta L. (maiden name unknown) about 1884. James appears as a resident at Bristol, Vermont, in the 1890 Veterans Census, which indicated he was blind. Soon thereafter he relocated to Pomona, Los Angeles County, California, where Edith died October 9, 1891, and where she also was buried. James then returned to Vermont where he married (2) the widow, Mrs. Edith A. (Sayles) Mix, October 5, 1892. Edith was his sister-in-law, the widow of his brother Norman Joel Mix (1833-1889). James and Edith were living at Burlington in June 1900. After his death in Burlington, Edith sent his remains to Pomona to be buried near his first wife. Edith filed for a Civil War widow's pension December 15, 1916, and received application No. 1,089,190 and certificate No. 843,608.
