Annie Louise Catchings

Mrs. Annie Louise Catchings was born to Jimmy and Manella Kern on February 26, 1925, in Kosciusko, MS. She was the first daughter, after five boys, to join the family. The boys were so happy to have a little sister. Six brothers, Edward, Will, M. L., Allen, Alexander, and Darlesley, and two sisters, Darlene Morris and Bettye Gaston, preceded her in death.

Sister Catchings joined the Christian Liberty M.B. Church Family at a very young age and maintained that membership throughout her life. She used her talents to serve the Lord for many years in the capacities of financial secretary, and Sunday school teacher and to sing to the glory of God in various choirs. It was in September 2009 that she was honored for being the oldest, continuously active member of the church.

Mrs. Catchings was educated in the elementary and high schools of Attala County, Mississippi. Upon graduating high school, where she exhibited a special talent in voice, she received a full scholarship to attend Jackson College (Jackson State University). During her sophomore year, she was crowned Miss Jackson College, a title she treasured as she was recognized by JSU throughout the years. After her sophomore year, she met a fellow student named Willie Fred Catchings with whom she was soon united in Holy Matrimony, a union that produced two children. After more than fifty years of marriage, Mr. Catchings preceded her in death in 1998.

During the process of completing her Bachelor's Degree at JSU, Mrs. Catchings taught high school English for six years in Sallis, MS. After receiving her Bachelor's Degree, she was employed at Tipton Street Elementary School as a second-grade teacher. Mrs. Catchings did further studies at Tuskegee University of Tuskegee, AL. She later served with the Kosciusko Separate School District from where she retired in 1986, thirty years as a second-grade teacher, totaling thirty-seven years of professional academic service. Many of her students remain in the area as professional and productive citizens in their respective communities.

Mrs. Catchings leaves to mourn her passing; a son, Willie Fred Catchings, Jr.; a daughter, Wynfred Jamison (John); a granddaughter, Yolanda Talley; two grandsons, John Jamison, Jr., and Rapheal Catchings; and three great-grandchildren. She also will be greatly missed by her two sisters, Emma L. Kern Black (Malcolm) of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Dr. Marilyn Kern Foxworth Griffith (Floyd) of Houston, TX; two sisters-in-law, Rosie B. Kern of Chicago, IL; and Virginia Kern of Kosciusko, MS. Also, two brothers-in-law, Dewitt Morris of St. Louis, MO; and Ralph Gaston of Chicago, IL; cousins, Gladys Langdon (Douglas), Bernice Foster, and Dorothy Mae Jones, and a dear friend, Ivory Cameron, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Known to all for her beautiful, lovely smile and friendly demeanor, Mrs. Catchings will be fondly remembered for her love of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, family children, church members, and neighbors. She never met a stranger. She loved people and people loved her.

Sister Catchings is now resting in peace in the arms of Jesus.
