He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1937 and from Bristol County Agricultural School in Dighton Massachusetts in 1942. He owned his own herd of dairy cows for many years. He later was employed by Cornell University of New York for the Bristol County division of Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a supervisor. He was a herd tester known by the farmers as "The Medicine Man".
