ROUSES POINT – The Rev. Gerald Sharland, 55, pastor of St. Patrick's Church was found dead in the rectory Sunday shortly before the 7 a.m. Mass.

The Rev. Raoul Poirier, assistant pastor, said he discovered the minister dead in his bed when he went to summon the priest.

"This is my home, these are my people," Father Sharland said to a fellow clergyman last summer when he was convalescing after hospitalization for heart complications. "I want to finish my ministry here and to be buried here."

Father Sharland first came to Rouses Point in 1950 as assistant to the Rev. J.A. Troie until 1953, when he was transferred to Champlain as assistant pastor at St, Mary's Church.

He came back to St. Patrick's as pastor in 1959. During the past seven years, he has been called a "working priest."

Under his leadership, the church and rectory have been remodeled and repaired. A new vault has been built in the cemetery and new trees and shrubbery have been planted.

Sister Rita Reff and Sister Adela Chebrette were brought to the parish to handle the Catholic Religious Education Program in 1972.

Father Sharland has been the host at annual Appreciation dinners at which he entertained parish members who worked for the church during the year in positions of responsibility.

A few people gathered at the rectory Sunday evening spoke quietly of Father Sharland.

"He was a good administrator and he developed teamwork among the parishioners – he was a good priest," said Jacquelyn Ducharme, his secretary.

"I have been his housekeeper for sever years," Mrs. Blanche Bilow said, "and he was a good man. He was lovable."

Father Poirier, who came to St. Patrick's recently as assistant after many years working with the White Fathers in Africa, said "Father Sharland was very helpful to me and very charitable."

Two teen-agers present, Gail Jarvis and Michael Boutin, paid their tribute, "He wanted to do so much for the young people, and he never turned away."

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Clark's Funeral Home, Lake Street, Rouses Point.

At 5 p.m. on Tuesday, St. Patrick's Church bell will toll for prayers at the funeral home, and Father Sharland's body will be escorted to St. Patrick's Church, where prayers will be offered, and he will lie in state there until 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

From 5 p.m. on Tuesday to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a vigil will be kept by members of the Altar Rosary, the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Court Patricia of Catholic Daughters of America and Knights of Columbus No. 2366.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Stanislaus J. Brzana, bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg at noon. The homily will be given by Msgr. Robert Farmer, deal of Clinton Deanery. Altar boys assisting will be John Ashline, Kevin Ashline, Brian Moore, John Podesta, Ronald Willette and Daniel Phillips. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
