Catherine Faye VanPelt, age 91 of New Philadelphia, died December 19, 2008, in Union Hospital at Dover following a lengthy illness. Born in Kansas, February 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Louis Lebold Brinkman and Edna Dowell Brinkman. Catherine worked most of her life for the former Douglas Aircraft, at Long Beach, California, where she was one of the few civilians heavily involved in the construction of the Lunar Rover Vehicles used by astronauts on the moon during the NASA Apollo missions.Mrs. VanPelt is survived by her caregiver and granddaughter, Kathy (Christopher) Butner, and their four children; Christopher Jr., James, Zara and Zoey Butner. A great-grandson, Thomas Butner, is deceased. Private services were held Tuesday in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Burial took place in East Avenue Cemetery.
