Newspaper article, Gonzales Tribune, Saturday, October 7, 1893: "A Sunday Night Brawl"
"A shooting scrape took place last Sunday night in front of Rodriquez's saloon in the extreme southern end of town, in which Frank Castro was severely wounded. The acts of the case are as follow: Charles Espinosa, Tom Amesquita, P. Biscarro, Jr., and Miguel Avilla were coming from Tom Blakes's saloon, where they had been spending the evening. As they passed Rodriguez's place Frank Castro stepped out and shouted to them to "dry up," at the same time applying to them, so they say, some very vile epithets. After several words passed between them, Espinosa and Castro engaged in an altercation, each being armed with a pistol. Several shots were fired, one of which took effect in Castro's groin. The wounded man was taken to his sister's house on Third street and Dr. Gordon was sent for, who, upon examining the wound, pronounced it dangerous, but not necessarily fatal. The next day Dr. Gordon and Dr. Stafford extracted the bullet, and Castro is now resting quite easily, with the chances for recovery very favorable.

Espinosa was arrested by Constable B. P. Smith immediately after the shooting and brought before Judge Miller, who arraigned him and set the examination for the following Wednesday at 2 o'clock P.M., at which time District Attorney P. E. Zabala appeared in behalf of the prosecution and Thos. Renison for the defendant. Miss Kate Perry of Monterey was appointed reporter. The only witness examined was Frank Castro, and the defendant offering no evidence was held to answer before a charge of assault with intent to commit murder. In default of bail he was committed to the county jail."
