Founder of Dufur Dead -. Andrew J. Dufur, well known to many local people, founder of the town of Dufur in Wasco county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. P. Balch, in Dufur last Friday. Mr. Dufur, who has been residing in Portland for a number of years, was visiting his old home. Interment will take place in Portland.

Mr. Dufur was uncle of Mrs. Charles N. Clarke, of this city.

Spouse: Mary Margaret Stansbery, whom he married on 02 May 1869 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.

He was one of the founders of the community of Dufur in Wasco County, Oregon. He served as the first mayor there.


He went into farming with his brother Enoch B. Dufur in the area of what it now the little town of Dufur. They had between 500 and 600 acres. They could be considered amongst the very first in Dufur as there was only Joseph Beasley prior to them. They would eventually own some 2,300 acres. Enoch would later become an attorney doing practice in Portland. Andrew would later be in the stock raising venture with his son-in-law Charles P. Balch.
He and his wife would become the parents of two daughters, Lois who married Charles P Balch and Ann, who was the wife of H. H. May.He was a member of Ridgely Lodge #71 I.O.O.F, of which he has served as a Past Grand. He was a Democrat and had served on numerous county and state conventions
