Mr. Gillespie was born in Cannelton and was a resident of Dunbar since childhood. He was the son of the late C.C. and Roxie A. Gillespie.
Mr. Gillespie retired as a maintenance superintendent from Union Carbide after 44 years of service, completing special assignments in Puerto Rico and Belgium where he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the Caribbean and Europe.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as machinist first class on LST 495. He took part in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach and returned there twice after the war with members of his family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating and fishing. He loved spending time with his family and cherished his grandchildren who called him “Daddy Jock.” He took his grandchildren traveling, taught them to water ski and gave them advice on marriages made in Heaven, like his with their “Grammy Libby.” His love for his family and friends endeared him to all.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Gillespie.
He is survived by daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Schneider of San Diego, Calif., and Susan and John Weigly of Powhatan, Va.; and grandchildren, Erin Schneider of San Francisco, Calif., Christian Schneider of San Diego, Kelly Marshall of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jennifer Weigly of Powhatan.
His wife was Elizabeth Mae "Libby" Whittington b. 5/20/1923 d. 4/27/2001 WV. No memorial found, likely buried in same cemetery.
