R.I. Knapp was an inventor. He invented (among many other things) the side-hill plow which revolutionized farming for those in this hilly region. He was also an avid proponent of prohibition in a town filled with saloons and rum-runners.

According to the 1880 census, R.I. Knapp was living in Spanishtown (aka Half Moon Bay) and was the widowed father of Emeline, Rose and Charles, who must have been his children with his 1st wife, Elizabeth. At the time, his occupation is listed as wheel wright and justice of the peace. By 1900, the census shows him married to Eliza, his 2nd wife.

R.I.'s son Charles married Annie S. and became the father of Ella L., Ethel M., and Robert T. (as of 1890 census)
