Eric George Bremner was serving with the Royal Australian Navy at the outbreak of war and served throughout the war being discharged on 23 November 1945. He served as the gun layer on the Port 20 mm Oerlikon aboard HMAS Arunta during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, October 1944, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for gallantry. The award was announced in the London Gazette on 23 March 1945 and he was presented with the medal by the Governor of Queensland, at Government House, Brisbane, on 20 November 1946.
