Chester Ray Alfrey, 68, graduated to heaven Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 5, 1936 in Farmers, Ky. to the late Herman and Ethel (Reed) Alfrey. He was married to Wanda Hammond on Sept 7, 1957, and she survives. a graduate of Anderson High School, he was employed by Delco-Remy in Anderson, Sheller-Globe in Union City and was retired from Pierce-Governor in Upland. After retirement, he and his son started TRC Card Shop and TRC softball team. He and his wife also ran Alfrey's Upholstery Shoppe for several years. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed golf, IU basketball and was a Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Browns fan. He attended church at the First Assembly of God in Winchester.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Terry "Bear" (wife Nicki) Alfrey and a daughter, Lawanna K. (husband Rick) Hawley, of Winchester; grandchildren, Rick (wife Carol) Hawley, Indianapolis, Kaylee and Briana Hawley, Jordan Alfrey (fiancee Melissa Eley) and Terri-Niccole Alfrey, all of Winchester; one great grandson, Chase Allen Hawley (mother Shannon Jones) West Alexandria, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Rex and Lester Alfrey; a sister, Juanita Roberts, and an infant son, Adrian Albert Alfrey.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home in Winchester with Jeff Bullard officiating. Burial will be at the Fountain Park Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 8 p.m., Monday and one hour before the service on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God, 991 E. Greenville Pike, Winchester.
