Husband of Harriet Newell Cook. His grandfather started Byron Tanning in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1832. William Devereux Byron found the perfect location in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Potomac River, where there was an abundance of rock oak stands, and he bought 100 acres. In 1897 he built his first tanning plant on the Conococheague Creek in Williamsport, Maryland. He would serve as Mayor of Williamsport from 1908-1912 and would be followed by both a grandson, who was his namesake and great-grandson who would both also serve as Mayor of Williamsport.
