He was the beloved husband for 37 years of Pauline A. (Handley) Abbis, and the loving father of Joseph A. Abbis of Bellingham. He leaves his sister, Anne Marie Sylvester and her husband, Stanley of Westwood, MA; and his nieces, nephews and cousins.
A resident of Bellingham for 17 years, formerly of Medfield, Newton and Roslindale where he was raised.
Joe was a retired employee of the Comm. of Mass. D.O.T./Mass. Highway for 34 years until retiring in 2010, working in Wellesley, Worcester and Millbury. He was a United States Coast Guard Veteran serving in the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 7272 of Bellingham.
From 1995 to 2005 he was a member of the Knight Cruisers Car Club of Bellingham and loved hot rods and classics. Devoted to his family and friends, he will be greatly missed.
Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 22nd at 8:00AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00AM at St. Blaise Church, 1158 So. Main St., Bellingham. Visiting hours are on Tuesday, August 21st from 5 to 8PM at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
