John, though not formally educated, was an excellent craftsman who could build almost anything. Though his title at the East Jordan Lumber Company's saw mill was millwright, his primary job was to sharpen saws. He also constructed his own home at 202 West Mary Street, East Jordan, Michigan in 1912. After his wife, Cora, died in 1937 he moved to Muskegon, Michigan where he worked as a plumber for Reid & Graf.

John remarried several years after his wife Cora's death, but upon his death, at 90 years of age, his remains were returned to be interred next to those of his first wife, Cora.
