Birth year is based on 1800 and 1810 census. He and wife were over age 45. He may have been born earlier, but his wife for child bearing years could not have been born much earlier. She would have been around 40 years old when Daniel the youngest was born in 1795.

I believe Mary to be the eldest child born abt 1780 and she died sometime between 1840 and 1848 (based on census and the below letters of David and Daniel Bowman both being widowers)

At some point between the birth of Susannah around 1787 and the marriage of Mary to Daniel Bowman in 1799 John has been in Rowan Co. Nc. Death certificate of one of Susannah's children indicates she was born in Rowan Co.

As far as the daughter Sarah b 1811, I don't know with certainty she is his daughter, but she shows up in the estate file. She definitely is not Samuel's daughter, nor is she John Jrs daughter, so there may have been a 2nd wife who was younger, but estate file doesn't show a wife. So I may have that in error, but I do know for sure she was a Simmons from two death certificates of her children.

This memorial is sponsored by David Oxford (#46875582) in honor of his deceased wife, Patricia Colleen Patterson, Find A Grave Memorial# 20370329. Patricia is the 3rd great grand daughter of Rachel Simmons, husband of David Bolick who moved to Des Moines Co. Iowa and who the letters were sent to from the Lincoln/Catawba/Alexander County Bolick/Bolch family who married these Simmons girls.

Researched by Carolyn Whitaker
I have always had numerous requests of what knowledge I had of the Simmons families in Lincoln/Catawba Counties, so I went in search of the records that are now online at the LDS site where they can be viewed.

There may be errors, but I believe I have a good list of the children of this John Simmons. The basis is used with the estate files and letters. Deeds have not been researched but are a wonderful source of establishing documented proof of children when they sell off the land.

They had a total of at least 3 sons and 5 daughters based on the 1800 and 1810 census and the ages of the children match very well with who was still at home from 1800 to 1810 based on that and marriage records of the children.

"We must now say to you that our family is all married off and left us but the three youngest - one son and two daughters left.
All your wifes connexion (not a typo :>) is enjoying a reasonable protion of good health at this time except Daniel Simmons he has labored under a tedious spell of the fever ever since corn planting time until now and has just recovered so far as to wolk about the house.

Your OLD SISTER SALLY requests some intelligence about her son MOSES BOLCH. If he is about there she wants him to write to her immediately and if he should not be there she wants you to give her the best information concerning him that you can.

Now with painful feelings we must inform you that our OLD BROTHER ADAM DECEASED this life some time last fall we expecting you never had heard of it. We have no doubt of meeting him at the great rising day.".....
