Stephen Joseph Kuharic was born on 24 Jan. 1894 in Pribic, Zagreb, Croatia. He was the first of 13 children born to Ana (Blazic) and Ivan Kuharic.

At the age of about 18 (around 1912), Steve left Croatia and moved to the United States. He settled in the area of South Bend/Mishawaka, Indiana. When he first arrived he lived with his Uncle Joseph and Aunt Gertrude Kuharic and he found employment at the Studebaker factory.

(Steve was born in Croatia, but in 1919 Croatia was merged into the country of Yugoslavia. After 1919 records requiring the location of Steve's birth read Yugoslavia instead of Croatia.)

On 10 September 1919 Stephen Kuharic married Veronica Cecilia Stopper. The couple were married by P.J. Carroll C.S.C. (A priest from the Catholic Congregation of Sancta Cruse).

Steve and Veronica had 4 children; Frances Geraldine, Catherine (Kay) Lucille, Ivan Frank and Rose Mary. ( There is birth certificate for a son Steven Kuharic, Jr., born on the same day as Frances. However there is no further information or reference to him anywhere.)

Steve worked at the South Bend Watch Factory from the time of their marriage until it closed on 31 Dec. 1929. He then took a position as an oiler at the Mishawaka Rubber and Woolen Works (later know as Ball Band) where he remained.

In 1963 Steve was planning a trip to Yugoslavia. He was looking forward to seeing his family that he hadn't seen in 50 years. Sadly, Stephen Joseph Kuharic died on 24 Sept. 1963 at the age of 69. He passed away at the St Joseph's Hospital in Mishawaka, Indiana. (Please note that in 1963 there were 2 St. Joseph Hospitals, one in Mishawaka and one in South Bend. Steve died in the one in Mishawaka.)
