Found in The State 14 November 1918: The funeral of Mrs. Bessie Springs Childs was held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Washington Street Methodist Church. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. N. Brunson, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. A. W. Blackwood of the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brunson paid a high tribute to the Christian character and qualities of leadership in church and State of Mrs. Childs. He said that because of her qualities her membership in church and patriotic organizations was sought; that she was not only a member but a leader in every organization to which she belonged and throughout it all she never neglected her home, which she adorned and beautified. The funeral was attended by members in a body of the Columbia Chapter, D.A.R., Wade Hampton Chapter, U.D.C.; M. C. Butler Chapter, U.D.C., and the Afternoon Music Club. A large number of relatives and friends from Lancaster, Rock Hill and other places attended the funeral. All of here children were present with the exception of Austin Childs, who is with the signal corps of the Eighty-first Division in France. The pallbearers were: Honorary, Gen. Wilie Jones, J. H. Bollin, D. W. Robinson, Iredell Jones, Dr. W. J. Murray and L. L. Hardin; active, Hugh Hammond, Caldwell Jones, John D. Bell, William M. Shannon, Walter Thomas and E. W. Wilson.
