On July 10, 1937 in Lancaster she married Howard Lovejoy "Zeke" Ball, son of Perley Adelbert Ball and Adah Elnora Allen.
Their children were Bradley Perley and Ruby Ann. They also had a stillborn son in Apr 1938 (he was buried in Guildhall, VT).
On Feb 9, 1952 a kerosene heater exploded and engulfed their house on Summer Street in flames. Howard rushed downstairs to get his wife out. Avis had been blind for many years and slept downstairs. Through following the sound of his voice she made it out of the house but was terribly burned. Howard put out the flames by rolling her in the snow. He ran through the snow to his parents house where the ambulance was called. Avis died later at Weeks Hospital in Lancaster. Rodney Jones, the young son of their housekeeper Ella Jones, followed Howard downstairs and rushed into Avis's bedroom calling her by his pet name for her. He died in the flames.
Howard, daughter Ruby, and housekeeper Ella Jones all survived the fire. Their son Bradley was spending the night at his grandparents house.
Avis and Rodney's bodies were entombed at Summer St Cemetery until they could be buried in the spring in Whitefield. Rodney was buried with Avis, probably because the mother couldn't afford it and he was close to Avis. (Ella's mother was a Huntoon so there was possibly a family connection). They were buried on April 14, 1952. Either at this time or when Howard died the headstone was placed here, but it makes it look like Rodney's last name was Ball. Per his death certificate that is incorrect.
Age: 35yrs
Cause of Death: 3rd Degree burns over entire body - Shock
Note:
Her mother didn't marry Frank Huntoon until 1920, which listed Irene as divorced. She first married Wilbur R. Scott in 1913 when she was 15 years old. He was the father of Avis and her older brother Bryant Roland, born 1914, but they were both always listed as being Frank Huntoon's children. Bryant was with his father in 1920 but then with his mother as a Huntoon. Later in his life he used his name Scott. Avis always used the Huntoon name. Her birth name was Scott; I put Huntoon as her middle name because that is the name she used.
