Lester G. Hammel, 83, of Chappa Drive died at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Silver Oaks Health Care Facility.

Mr. Hammel served with the Army Air Corps during World War II in North Africa and Italy.

He managed the Greensburg Hatchery, farmed near Letts and Corydon and, in 1961, moved to Columbus and worked for Reliance Electric and as a real estate broker.

He was a charter member of the Church of the Galilean and attended the Rocky Ford Free Methodist Church.

He enjoyed raising cattle, boating, gardening, reading and spending winters in Hobe Sound, Fla.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark A. Hammel officiating. Calling will be from 9 until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Born in Jefferson County July 12, 1921, Mr. Hammel was the foster son of John C. and Bonnie Gray. He married Vertess M. Toler Hammel Jan. 1, 1948.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Philip R. Hammel of Anderson and Mark A. Hammel of Scipio; grandchildren, Anna S. and Sarah A. Hammel of Scipio and Nicole A. Hammel of Columbus; and a great-granddaughter, Bailey A. Kirts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jeremy P. Hammel; two brothers; and a sister.
